The AYANEO Pocket DMG is a modern take on the Game Boy, with an OLED screen, and analogue stick.
Today, during its REMAKE event, device maker AYANEO announced a plethora of new devices, including the AYANEO Pocket DMG. Clearly inspired by the original 1989 Game Boy, this new Pocket DMG takes things up a notch.
As a vertical handheld, it comes with your typical ABXY button layout, a Start and a Select button, dedicated shoulder buttons, and a D-Pad. But unlike the classic Game Boy, it also has a single analogue stick, allowing the Pocket DMG to emulate far more devices.
The Pocket DMG also has a 1240 by 1080-pixel OLED screen, though AYANEO didn't specify whether it's touchscreen or not.
Even though this OLED screen may not have touch capabilities, the Pocket DMG has one more trick up its sleeve: the rectangular area around the analogue stick is, in fact, a touchpad. This way, you could technically use the touchpad surface as the right analogue stick in different games.
A few questions still remain open, as AYANEO hasn't shared if the Pocket DMG runs on Android (I suspect it does, as the Pocket DMG has what looks like a fingerprint sensor and your typical AYA-button on the front). We also don't yet know what the device is capable of in terms of power, but to quote the Chinese manufacturer:
In terms of performance, Pocket DMG can be considered the ceiling of current vertical handhelds. In terms of human-computer interaction, the introduction of Pocket DMG will also address pain points in user experience that previous vertical handhelds had.
The release date and price will be announced at a later date and I, for my part, am eagerly awaiting more information as I love what this looks like.
