Nintendo Switch emulator project Ryujinx shuts down

The open-source project Ryujinx is no more, following a 'request' from Nintendo.

Ryujinx, just like Suyu before it, is no more. This popular Switch emulator option appears to have been taken offline today following a recent request from Nintendo.

In a Discord message seen by overkill and now shared on X, project developer 'riperiperi' shared an update noting that lead developer 'gdkchan' had been contacted by Nintendo and had been "offered an agreement to stop working on the project". In addition to halting work on the emulator tool, the request also purportedly requested that the 'Ryujinx' team page on GitHub be removed, and any control of project assets be relinquished.

The open-source C# emulator started development way back in September of 2017 and had close to 15,000 stars on GitHub (a way of essentially 'bookmarking' a project and keeping tabs on it). Ryujinx also had the support of well over 500 paying contributors, and thousands of members on Patreon.

The Ryujinx emulator worked across platform on Windows, macOS and Linux, and made playing well over 3,000 Switch games on alternative devices viable.

At time of writing the GitHub page for the project is no longer available — resulting in a 404 error. The removal of this page therefore can be taken as confirmation that an 'agreement' of sorts has been reached, with the project no longer being an active one.

Developer riperiperi thanked all those who had contributed code, issued bug reports, or helped with documentation on the long-running emulator project.

Thank you all for following us throughout the development. I was able to learn a lot of really neat things about games that I love, enjoy them with renewed qualities and in unique circumstances, and I'm sure you all have experiences that are similarly.

The project's official website is still online for now. But yeah, another busy week for Nintendo's legal department.
