Apple executives sidestep headset question, scoff at Metaverse

When asked about Apple's thoughts on the metaverse, SVP Greg Joswiak claimed it's a word he'll "never use".

Joanna Stern, Craig Federighi, Greg Josqiak on stage

Apple Marketing SVP Greg Joswiak and Software Engineering SVP Craig Federighi joined the Wall Street Journal's Joanna Stern on stage Wednesday to discuss the iPhone's move to USB-C, the company's stance on privacy, and how Apple is navigating the new 'working from home' era.

Towards the end of the near ~35 minute discussion Stern briefly pressed the two Apple executives to talk about their long-rumoured mixed reality headset.

She asked: "how about the headset, how's that work coming?" — the question was met with a jokey non-answer about Airpods — and Stern quickly moved on.

Next she asked the pair to fill in the blank, and finish a defining sentence: "the metaverse is...".

Greg 'Joz' Joswiak was quick to respond wittily replying: "a word I'll never use". Federighi was swift in concurring with this jeering retort.

So, don't expect to see any Apple version of the 'metaverse' on their upcoming virtual and augmented reality projects. I guess we also shouldn't expect to see Zuckerberg's Metaverse as a launch partner for the Apple Glasses — whenever that happens.
