A new Sony remote play device for playing PlayStation 5 games outside of the home is on the way.
Sony has confirmed (Wednesday, May 24) that a rumoured new PlayStation handheld is in fact on the way.
Early last month a story emerged suggesting that Sony was working on a new handheld device, codenamed the Q Lite — we now know that such a device is officially on the way, and expected to arrive later this year.
But before you get too excited, this isn't a Steam Deck competitor or really a handheld in the tradional sense at all — it's more akin to a DualSense controller with a screen slapped in the middle for streaming.
PS not Vita
This new device, which is still going by a 'Project Q' codename, will not be a dedicated handheld — instead it will offer PlayStation gamers a way to play their PS5 games outside of the home (via WiFi) using Sony's Remote Play streaming feature.
This remote play requirement was stressed during the unveiling with an on-screen reminder stating that any 'games must be installed on PS5 console'.
The PlayStation Project Q sports an 8-inch HD screen and features all of the same buttons and features that you would typically find on a DualSense wireless controller. It will not support VR titles.
Sony confirmed this rumoured Q Lite device during their 2023 'PlayStation Showcase' — an hour-long presentation highlighting a range of upcoming PS5 and PSVR 2 titles.
Speaking about the device during the PlayStation Showcase (shared on Twitch and YouTube) PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said:
“We are launching a dedicated device to let you stream any game from your PS5 console using Remote Play over Wi-Fi”
Not much else is yet known about the Project Q device, but Insider Gaming understands that the portable is currently undergoing quality assurance (QA) testing, and is scheduled to arrive before any potential PS5 Pro.
