This small controller looks to be a solid travel companion for gaming on the go.
Accessory maker CRKD, best known for their popular Nitro Deck pad for the Switch, are back with a new line of controllers — and this time they've gone miniature, with a range of cutesy, pocket-sized input devices dubbed ATOM.
We recently got some hands-on time with this new Bluetooth controller at Gamescom, getting the chance to put the dinky device through its paces.
Now, one thing is immediately clear — this controller isn't going to replace your main controller of choice, and nor is it really trying to. This petite pad is more of a companion device — the sort of thing you'll sling in your bag as part of your everyday carry, always ready to accompany any impromptu gaming sessions. ATOM is the sort of thing that looks to be perfect for handing to a friend when wanting to do some quick lunchtime sessions of Mario Kart on the Switch, or for hooking up to your phone to play some games on your commute.
I was pleasantly surprised at how the ATOM felt in hand — particularly as at first glance, owing to its size, I thought it would be rather difficult to grasp comfortably. Admittedly, you aren't going to want to do a completionist run of Elden Ring with this thing — but it's more than adequate for a more typical gaming session, especially with 2D titles. If you're ok with a split Joy-Con, then this is a clear step above that, offering a more comfortable experience, and a solid button layout too.
I've already got one of 8bitdo's similarly miniature controllers (the zero 2) — and the ATOM's buttons felt a touch more satisfying to click, with a firm D-Pad and good height on the face buttons. The ATOM controller also has four shoulder buttons, versus the two found on the rival zero 2. Yes, the ZL and ZR buttons on the ATOM are a bit fiddly and small, but I'd say having them is a plus over their absence on the alternative from 8bitdo.
We're told this new controller should give you about ten hours of battery life, and thanks to its USB-C port (and included cable), it can easily be charged back up with a portable power bank — again, another plus for its compact, mobile nature.
There's a variety of fun colours to choose from, including a rad clear 'Atomic Purple' style, and at just $20 I'd say this is the sorta thing that's priced at a level which makes it an easy decision to grab just to ensure you always have a controller with you, ready to go.
