The latest Whoop makes me want to get rid of my Apple Watch

Two new trackers, three new tiers, and a whole bunch of new features.

Whoop 5

Two new trackers, three new tiers, and a whole bunch of new features.

Yesterday, Whoop announced two new products, the Whoop 5.0, and the higher-end Whoop 5.0 MG (MG stands for medical grade).

Both trackers are smaller, more powerful, and come packed with new features:

On the hardware side, both have ten times the power efficiency, translating to 14 days of battery life. There’s also a new wireless charging pack that holds another 30 days of charge. The processor is also 60% faster, and the sensors now capture data roughly 26 times per second.

As for the MG version, it additionally adds EKG support and blood pressure features.

And yes, there are new strap options, including leather for formal wear, though they aren’t backwards compatible with the 4.0 model.

Software is where the bigger shift happens. The app got a redesign, and with it comes several new features:

  • Healthspan: a new longevity score based on 9 physiological metrics that tells you how well you’re ageing;
  • EKG functionality (MG only), with FDA clearance for detecting atrial fibrillation;
  • Blood pressure insights (MG only);
  • Hormonal insights for women, expanding cycle tracking to include recovery, stress, and performance across life stages;
  • Advanced Labs (coming soon), a beta feature that lets users order blood tests and view results in the app, but only in the US for now (sobs in EU);

Whoop also tweaked sleep tracking, added haptic alarms, and now offers AI-powered coaching as part of the default experience.

All this is now split across three subscription tiers:

  • Whoop One ($199/year): You'll get the Whoop 5.0, basic tracking, a wired charger, and AI coaching;
  • Whoop Peak ($239/year): Still the Whoop 5.0, but this tier adds Healthspan, stress tracking, wireless charging, and the full dashboard;
  • Whoop Life ($359/year): Includes the MG hardware, plus EKG and blood pressure features.

It’s a clear move away from the “just for elite athletes” positioning. The new lineup tries to appeal to anyone serious about wellness.

The pricing is still steep, but it’s more structured and arguably more approachable than before. After the Oura Gen 4, this might be the next thing I'd like to test.
