It's the 90s all over again, as Sonic faces Mario on Switch this week

An old rivalry is reignited on Nintendo Switch this week, as a new Sonic game takes on a new Mario game.

Were you Team SEGA or Team Nintendo? Well, it doesn't really matter as you can enjoy both the latest Mario and Sonic games on the Nintendo Switch this week.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder producer claims close Sonic Superstars release is coincidental

According to Mario producer Takashi Tezuka, Wonder and Sonic Superstars’ release dates are ‘an interesting coincidence.’

Yes, silly playground console rivalries were very much a thing in the early 90s, but with such allegiances now a thing of the past Sonic's latest, well-received gotta-go-fast simulator is releasing on Nintendo's hardware this week — alongside an all-new 2D Mario adventure.

The two platforming giants join around 40 other games on Nintendo's hybrid. As ever, we've gone through all of the upcoming titles, and the full list is below for you to look through. There's a short description of each upcoming game, along with a link out to more information (such as screenshots, a trailer, etc).

Monday, October 16

• Kingdom Eighties — This is a really charming looking story-based pixel-art base-building/tower defence game that's set in the 80s.

Tuesday, October 17

• A Boy and His Blob: Retro Collection — This is a bundle of the NES and Game Boy originals.
• Silent Paws: Winter Quest — Another in a long line of fox-through-nature walking sims.
• 📦 Skull Island: Rise of Kong — You play as Kong in this third person action-adventure, taking on various beasts. (Physical release.)
• 📦 Sonic Superstars — A new speedy 2D Sonic adventure, this time with proper multiplayer too. (Physical release.)
• ToyBox Puzzle — A simple spatial puzzler about sorting out your toys.
• Vlad Circus: Descend into Madness — This is a pixel art horror adventure game that tells the story of a 1920s freak circus. M for mature.

Wednesday, October 18

• Ball laB II — A minimalistic precision platformer.
• Hellboy Web of Wyrd — This roguelike action brawler is dripping in comic book style. Looks super cool.
• Super Ultimate Fighters — 2D fighting game with a variety of fighting styles.

Thursday, October 19

• 📦 Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express — Murder mystery classic updated and set in 2023. (Physical release)
• Bish Bash Bots — I tried this at Gamescom — it's a casual tower defense meets brawler with bots-a-plenty to take out.
• Break the Glass Cup — Basic physics puzzler.
• Choice Clash: What Would You Rather? — 300 questions to ponder. Reminds me of that Everybody Votes Wii Channel sans the online bit.
• Dinosaurs: Mission Dino Camp — A schleich branded dino action game
• Gargoyles Remastered — A revived version of the 90s 16-bit side-scrolling Disney platform adventure.
• 📦 Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Ecto Edition — Bustin out all the DLC in this ghost hunting package. (Physical release)
• Hentai Tales Vol. 1 — Anime puzzles.
• Hidden Cats of London — Find the moggies.
• 📦 Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged — Racer with over 130 cars. (Physical release)
• 📦 Inescapable: No Rules, No Rescue — A 'social thriller' narrative adventure set on an island. M for mature. (Physical release)
• Mail Time — A cozy, 'cottagecore light-platformer' adventure in which you deliver mail.
• Makoto Waikaido's Case Files Trilogy Deluxe — A trio of whodunnit mysteries to solve. Japan only release, but has an English language option.
• Revenge of Banana — Fruit and veg themed FPS.
• Shalnor Legends 2: Trials of Thunder — You're an Orc in this top-down RPG action adventure.
• Soviet Project — Budget USSR-era horror adventure.
• Tales of Mathasia — Maths edutainment.
• The Jackbox Party Pack 10 — These couch party games usually deliver a good time.
• Witchy Life Story — This magical adventure sim is nicely illustrated.

Friday, October 20

• Another World Mahjong Girl — It's mahjong.
• Bubble Shoot Farm — Bubble bursting puzzler.
• Druidwalker — An intriguing looking 'experimental' rogulike about exploring a forest via cards.
• Garden Buddies — A chill 3D garden sim meets 'virtual oasis' with a brief story mode too.
• Jujubos — A puzzle platformer with 60 levels.
• Latte Stand Tycoon+ — A role-playing sim game about running a coffee shop.
• Squid Commando — Arcade action shoot 'em up with co-op.
• 📦 Super Mario Bros Wonder — An all new 2D Mario platformer set in the Flower Kingdom. Unquestionably the highlight of the week. (Physical release)
• Warm Snow — A Chinese folklore dark-fantasy action roguelike. M for mature.

Saturday, October 21

• Lamphead — Budget platformer which plays with light. Curiously this says it doesn't support TV play.
