🔗 Pokemon cards ditch the plastic to stop scalpers
Pokemon Center stores in both Japan and Singapore are doing away with plastic wrapping to deter flippers.
Pop into a Pokemon Center to grab the latest ETB and you may be surprised to see boxes without any plastic wrapping.
Pokemon stores in Japan and now Singapore (as noted by VGC) have started ditching the outermost packaging typically found on various Pokemon TCG products — not as some environmentally friendly move, no — but as a way to deter scalpers.
Over the past couple of years the Pokemon TCG has exploded in popularity once again (the 151 set pulled a lot of folks back in), and as such has attracted a ton of resellers who snap up all available products in the hope of flipping them for profit. However, sealed goods tend to be what fetches the money, so by removing this plastic packaging it seems the Pokemon Centers are making what moves they can to keep TCG goods on the shelves for those who genuinely want them. Good.
