Is this a foldable portable gaming machine from the South Korean tech giant?
Samsung could be stepping into the gaming space with a new handheld that looks like something of a cross between the Galaxy Z Fold or Flip and the Nintendo Switch.
This possible future device has been uncovered via a recent patent filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
These patent images, registered earlier this month and first spotted by 91mobiles, show a series of "ornamental design" drawings for an "electronic games console" submitted to the 'games and toys' category.
The uncovered images depict a seemingly slim device with a large, foldable display. The screen appears to fold in the middle, unfolding out to form a wide, uninterrupted screen. Either side of this folding screen is bookended by a D-pad, and other buttons.
Samsung have quite a fair bit of experience now in making foldable smartphones, and bringing such a flip-style design to a handheld would make for a rather interesting, and highly portable device. Yes, foldables have their issues, but they've come a long way, particularly when it comes to hiding the inevitable crease.
The big question here is whether Samsung actually plans to release this device or if it’s just another concept destined to live in the patent archives like countless others. It wouldn’t be the first time a tech giant has given a glimpse at something exciting, only for it to remain fantasy.
