A Mario minefield of misinformation awaits.
Something occurred to me last night whilst reading through some Switch 2 news — the next time we find out more about Nintendo's new console is going to be during the Direct presentation scheduled for April 2. That's right, the day after April Fools' Day. Or, as I've come to call it: 💩 Internet Bullshit Day.
So, this means there's likely going to be a higher than usual number of annoying "leaks" and terrible, blurry phone pics flying around (inexplicably taken with a camera from 2005) — and they'll all be floating around the wider web on the eve of Nintendo's big reveal.
Now, I get that April Fools' Day gags online are meant to be a bit of fun — it's the one time of the year where folks get to speculate and hypothesise on what could be. A bit of silly wishcasting for the most part. But it's also, quite often — especially when coming from corporate social media accounts trying to be cute — a bit lame and half-baked.
April 1st 2025 is going to be pretty much 24 hours of increasingly unhinged fake Nintendo reveals, be it from an anonymous Twitter account, or someone on Reddit claiming their cousin's best friend's brother has played a Switch 2 and knows all about some crazy secret new feature.
The timing isn't exactly perfect.
Maybe I'm being a bit of a killjoy here — sure, some April Fools' stuff can be amusing — but the lead up to April's Nintendo Direct presentation may now look like something of a minefield of misinformation.
I guess my message is this: consider this your PSA to stay vigilant, trust nothing, and maybe — just maybe — don’t believe every grainy “leaked” screenshot you see as you scroll the timeline that day.
