Creating a Steam Machine from a Steam Deck? "I was so preoccupied with whether or not I could that I didn’t stop to think if I should"

Remember the Steam Machine? Well, one determined modder has decided to have a go at creating a modern version of such a device — by ripping apart a Steam Deck.

The Steam Machine was Valve's attempt at offering a home console-like experience via a series of small gaming computers. These devices, created in partnership with various hardware makers and computer vendors, ran SteamOS — offering a plug-and-play way for players to access their Steam library on a device with a dinky form factor.

Ultimately the Steam Machine project failed, but from the ashes came the Steam Deck — Valve's popular portable PC. But what if, for some reason, you still yearned for a Steam Machine? Modder crastinator-pro, as spotted by GamingOnLinux, has the answer by way of their crackpot Steam Brick — offering all the power of a Steam Deck....but without the screen or controller.

No screen, no controller, and absolutely no sense

Admittedly, this may seem like something of a pointless endeavour now that we have the Deck, but the creator of the Steam Brick knows this, jokingly sharing that they were "so preoccupied with whether or not I could that I didn’t stop to think if I should". To be fair, that's how the best projects come about right?

The process of tearing down the Steam Deck, and making it fit in the small scale 3D printed housing is outlined in full in this detailed blog post. The end result is a neat, modified Steam Deck transformed into a compact, mobile, AR gaming device. It's a fun look at some tinkering, and also gives us a glimpse at just what could now be possible if Valve were to revisit the Steam Machine idea.

No screen, no controller, and absolutely no sense, just a power button and a USB port.
