Here's how you can use your iPad as an external monitor for your Steam Deck or Asus ROG Ally.

Thanks to a newly released app, it is now possible to use your iPad as a screen for your Steam Deck or ROG Ally.

So, if you have an older iPad lying around or want to use your new 12.9" iPad Pro with an Mini-LED screen as a monitor on the go, here's what you need to do:

How to use your iPad as an external monitor

  1. First, be sure you're running iPadOS 17 on your iPad. It also needs to have a USB-C connection for this to work.
  2. Next, install Orion on your iPad. The app is free, but for a one-time fee, you can unlock features like AI-powered 4K Upscaling and CRT filters, which are especially great when combined with retro games. Also, can we talk about how excellent the onboarding is?!
  3. Next, you need to get one of these adapters. Here's a recommendation by the developers of Orion itself. (They have an ongoing list of other adapters tested to work with the iPad.)
  4. When you have everything ready, you can hook up your Steam Deck or ROG Ally to the iPad, open up Orion, and are ready to go.

The experience will naturally be best when combined with a stand for your iPad and an external controller.
