Team overkill wishes you a rad 2025.
That's it! 2024 is wrapped and we're on to the next stage: welcome to 2025!
Last year was a pretty wild one across the handheld space, and the next twelve months is shaping up to be an even bigger year for all things portable — mainly thanks to Nintendo and the eventual arrival of the highly anticipated Switch 2.
Not a month went by last year without some form of new handheld hardware news, be that from the likes of MSI with the oddly named Claw, the reveal of the Orange Pi Neo, AYANEO's endless array of portables — including their new folding range, and others such as the Odin 2 Mini, ASUS ROG Ally X, and the Zotac Zone to name but a few.
Handheld gaming is in a super interesting place right now, chiefly thanks to the ageing Switch and the head-turning Steam Deck for shaping the market into what it now is — a thriving, fast-paced, and evolving space where consumers have a ton of varied options for when it comes to gaming on the go. We've never had it so good.
As ever, we're going to be here throughout the year to bring you the latest news on all things handheld — be that a hot new portable PC, whatever pops up at CES next week, another weird niche handheld with a crank maybe, or whatever Nintendo has up its sleeve.
Now, 2024 was an admittedly rough year for the gaming industry at large, not only across development, but also for us in the media. Many gaming sites and notable writers suffered from layoffs, continued toils with AI, and major search algorithm changes. Big media players consolidated, shifted roles, and changed focus.
It's been exhausting for many, and it doesn't particularly feel like these sweeping changes are close to being done yet. For now though, both myself and Kevin are still here — a two person, independent publisher, focused on bringing you our thoughts and observations on everything gaming on the go.
If you've got a passion for handhelds, you're in the right place — and if you like our work, there's ways to support us as we continue our independent reporting. 2025 is looking to be a wild one, and we've got some exciting stuff planned. Thank you for reading, sharing and supporting overkill.
Happy New Year, now let's get to it. 🎮
