The Oblivion Remastered is out, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is out, and handhelds are not going out anymore.
Hi, hello, welcome to the Oblivion Remastered fan club overkill Digest newsletter, your go-to source for everything tech and gaming!
The Oblivion remaster is out. Calling it a remaster doesn't do it justice, though; this is a full-on remake. It's glorious. I started playing on Friday, and I'm 20 hours into the game. I will continue playing after finishing this newsletter. And by pure coincidence, I'm off for a week starting next Wednesday, so... no, I won't shut up about it. I'm working on a review, and I'm teasing my opinions in today's premium section.
Now, let's get into all the other stuff that happened.
๐ Big Moves
- Anbernic, AYN, and Retroid are suspending shipments to the US. I'm not going to comment on the politics of this. But right now, if you are in the US and on the fence about buying a handheld from a Chinese-based manufacturer, you may want to act quickly. It's unclear how the whole tariff situation is going to roll out, but if the manufacturers can't find ways to ship their devices from anywhere other than China (I'll be honest, no clue if that is even enough; I'm based in Europe), it'll soon get very, very expensive. Or not, because this is all a mess, so maybe it'll all get rolled back again.

๐ฎ Platform Updates
- The Discord CEO is stepping down. He will be replaced by former Activision/Blizzard and King exec Humam Sakhnin, which is so clearly a move towards an upcoming IPO. I can't wait (that's sarcasm!) for the upcoming enshittification of Discord.
- The Lenovo Legion Go S running SteamOS gets another price hike. Originally, Lenovo expected to launch this handheld with the Z2 Go chip at $499. It will now cost $599, making it basically redundant in a world where you can get the cheapest OLED Steam Deck for $549, which, according to The Verge, even performs much better.
๐ป Hardware & Software
- Boox is expanding the 7-inch line-up. The new and improved Gen II fixes a few of the caveats I originally complained about in my review of the Go Color 7: newer Android, and better turn page buttons. It also adds pencil support, which is a welcome change. There is also a new Go 7 without a colour screen, which otherwise seems identical to the Go Color 7 Gen II. Little teaser, I'm reviewing the Supernote Manta next week.
- Razer sells a vertical mouse now. The Pro Click V2 Vertical Edition (what a mouthful; these companies need to start hiring me to help with naming their devices) is one of two new devices Razer is selling, the other one being the Pro Click V2. Both mice feature programmable buttons, Razer Chroma compatibility, and some stupid button to quickly access some AI-bullshit because that's apparently something we need to cram into literally every device on earth nowadays. The mice cost $99.99 for the Pro Click V2 and $119.99 for the Vertical Edition.
๐ฒ Playthings
- The best settings for the Oblivion Remastered on Steam Deck. Since the remaster runs on UE5, it's hard to dial it in on Steam Deck correctly. However, Timo has found a way, through editing a bunch of .ini files (simply download the mods we link to), to make the game at least aim for 30 FPS.
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a really, really good game. Unfortunately, it dropped in the same week as the Oblivion Remastered. But this game is currently so hyped that I'm planning to pick this up, right after I'm done with Oblivion (until the modding community makes me want to replay or, alternatively, as soon as Skyblivion drops). It sits at a Metacritic score of 92, making it a prime candidate for the Game of the Year title, only to lose to GTA VI (I'm predicting GTA VI will win every kind of title, even if the actual game turns out to be crap).
- Ghost of Yotei is coming on October 2nd. The linked trailer looks so sick. Genuinely looking forward to this game. For some context: I have Jin Sakai's mask tattooed on my back.
- Subnautica 2 is still coming in 2025. Been a while since we had any news of what is probably the scariest gaming franchise in existence (I have a mild case of thalassophobia), but this week we got a new dev vlog, showcasing that the game is still coming along nicely. And I'm still not ready to play it.
- FBC: Firebreak launches on June 17. The multiplayer game made by the studio behind Control and Alan Wake will launch on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox and will come to Game Pass.
๐ Quick Hits
- Fellow Coffee is launching their first espresso machine. This doesn't usually fit with what I normally cover here on overkill, but the overlap of people into tech and gaming, who are also into coffee, doesn't seem that small to me. This looks like a promising new espresso machine by Fellow. I happily use a bunch of their stuff, so I'm very intrigued to see how this will be accepted by the coffee community.

๐ Premium Deep Dive: Oblivion Remastered is beautiful, but still kinda rough
Nearly two decades later โ and after sinking thousands of hours into Skyrim โ stepping back into Oblivion feels like coming home. Only this time, the old place has a new coat of paint, courtesy of Unreal Engine 5โs shiny visuals and a handful of modern upgrades (we can sprint now!).

But I'm still seeing some cracks.
