#83: The Switch 2 is real, Nvidia and Intel block SteamOS, and why the Vita failed

In today's overkill digest, we look at why the PS Vita failed according to an insider, finally learn more about the Nintendo Switch 2, and listen to a Valve dev share more about SteamOS.

Good day, hello, and welcome. This is overkill digest, your go-to newsletter for everything handheld gaming.

I'm playing Skyrim again. This time I installed Licentia Next (it has optional NSFW-content that you can easily ignore, but be warned), a mod list available through Wabbajack.

I think this might be the most stable mod list I've installed in years? After 100 hours, my game crashed once. I wonder if the mod list author had to make a deal with a Daedra to achieve this, but I'm surprised. I just finished the VIGILANT quest mod for the first time, and it had me so confused I had to look at multiple Lore-videos. Now, I'm heading to Wyrmstooth.

I also have LoreRim installed as a second list, but I have yet to dive into that. Also, before you ask, unfortunately none of this runs on the Steam Deck. Both lists take up close to a terabyte on my hard drive, and they are so graphics heavy, I think the Steam Deck would transform into a portable heater if you tried to run any of these lists.

But enough Skyrim talk, this week's top news is certainly the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, so let's dive right in.

🗞️ This Week in Handhelds

🚀 Big Handheld Moves

  • This is the Nintendo Switch 2. After months of leaks and rumours, Nintendo finally revealed the Nintendo Switch 2 (yeah, that’s the name — Super Switch would’ve been cooler, I know). Details are still scarce, with more coming in a Nintendo Direct this April, but from what we’ve seen, it’s basically the Switch 1… just better. Honestly? I’m into it. So is Chris, our in-house Switch expert, who’s sharing his take this week — more on that below.
  • The GPD Win Mini (2025) is now on Indiegogo. Prices kick off at $769 for 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage, climbing up to $1426. You’ve got three chip options: AMD 8840U, HX 365, or HX 370. Shipping starts in March.

🎮 Platform Updates

  • Nintendo admits emulation is legal. A Nintendo lawyer admitted what we all knew already: emulation is legal. But this doesn't mean that Yuzu or Ryujinx will be back, since anything that bypasses protections or leans into piracy will get nuked by Nintendo.
  • Intel and Nvidia are stalling a SteamOS release. In a French interview, Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais talked about the 12-years long journey of SteamOS. He talks about how SteamOS transformed over the years, what Valve's plans for future hardware look like, and why Nvidia and Intel might be the reason why we are not seeing a public SteamOS release just yet.

💻 Hardware Corner

  • Shuhei Yoshida shared why the PS Vita failed. Yoshida, after 30 years at Sony, retired this month. In an interview, he shared his thoughts on why the PS Vita failed: development teams were split between the Vita and Sony’s home consoles, but with limited studios, the PS4 took priority. I'm still salty!
  • The RTX 5000 series in Europe will be expensive! Take this with a grain of salt, since these prices might just be placeholders for now until the GPUs are officially released, but it looks like Europeans might have to pay up to $1000 more depending on what card we pick.

🎲 Gaming News

📌 Quick Hits

  • Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2 is out. The Castlevania anime adaptions by Netflix has been great so far, so I'm thrilled for a new season.
  • Taki Udon shares his FPGA-vision. Time Extension interviewed YouTuber turned hardware manufacturer Taki Udon on his plans with the upcoming SS One (a PlayStation lookalike). It's an interesting look behind-the-scenes.

🔒 Premium Deep Dive: Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal doesn't fully pull back the curtain

Depending on who you ask, Nintendo are either doomed, or on to a something of a winner with their recently revealed Switch 2.

😖 Oh no, more of the same! 😁 Yay, more of the same!

After months of leaks telling us pretty much exactly what to expect from this new hardware, plenty of folks are now seemingly surprised (with some even outright disappointed) at those very same pre-reveal details being pretty much bang on the money.
