This is the 69th edition of the overkill digest newsletter. Nice!
Hi, hello, and welcome to a new edition of overkill digest, your go-to source for everything handheld gaming (and then some).
overkill is now well into its third year of existence (we launched in August 2022), and Chris and I have been working behind the scenes on improving the website and the direction, aligning it much more into what we believe makes for the best possible website.
So this week we updated our About Page, which should help make clearer what we are about. It reads:
What We’re About
Games that fit in your hand, a space where we obsess over the minutiae, and a community of readers who are just as into handhelds as we are. You won’t find us repeating headlines or parroting press releases — we’re here to dig deeper, experiment, and have fun doing it.
We’re crafting essays that delve into the culture of handheld gaming, guides that help you max out your gear, and commentary that doesn’t hold back.
We’re not shy about our opinions, and we’re certainly not pretending to be overly objective. This is a space where handheld gaming and raw commentary collide — basically, we’re opinionated AF.
We'll be improving the website and our editorial direction even more (as you may remember, we're still working on that redesign). There will also be some changes to this very newsletter, but it's too early to announce them. But I hope you will enjoy reading the new version as much as I enjoy writing it.

On Friday, I received this adapter, to replace the 2230 NVME in my ROG Ally to a 2280 SSD. Thanks to this, I will be able to upgrade the storage in my Ally from 512 GB to two whopping terabytes.
I plan to use all that new space to dual-boot Bazzite and Windows 11 as I did on my new AM02 couch PC. I plan to later write a guide on all the steps involved to make this run, so if you have any questions you'd like me to answer, both related to the process, as well as to running Bazzite on a ROG Ally, hit reply.
And with that, let's get to this week's news.
What happened this week
- The biggest news this week was probably Sony's State of Play this Tuesday. It was... ok. It was a decent look at a couple of games (here is everything that was shown) but as a pure PlayStation event, it was mediocre at best. But this is great for us PC gamers as a lot of the stuff Sony has shown will come to PC. My biggest highlights were the trailer for the Lake House expansion for Alan Wake 2 and the announcement of Ghost of Yotei, a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima (I have Jin's mask tattooed on my back).
- Timo shared his best settings for Frostpunk 2 on Steam Deck.
- Valve has broken new records, as over 38 million people were on Steam last weekend.
- And if you want, you can now sue Valve (here's more on that).
- It is still way too early to read too much into this, but Valve is testing ARM64 support for popular games available on Steam. This could mean everything from new hardware directly from Valve, or them just making sure that Proton is compatible with the new ARM-based laptops.
- We're getting a new biome in Minecraft. If my math checks out, this is the first new biome in three years.
- Star Wars: Outlaws is coming to Steam in November and Two Point Museum in March of 2025 (here is our preview for that game).
- Meanwhile, Assassin's Creed Shadows is delayed to February 2025.
- Everyone's favourite emulation tool, EmuDeck, has reached version 2.3 bringing a completely revamped design, and new emulators for 3DS amongst other things.
- Talking of emulation: you can now play Wii U games on Android handhelds!
- YouTuber Taki Udon has released his DIY kit that brings an OLED screen to the Nintendo Switch Lite. He has different kits, depending on if you want touch capabilities, but they are already sold out.
- Lenovo has confirmed/leaked the existence of two new devices: the Legion Go Gen Two, and the Legion Go Lite. While we don't know exactly what both devices will be capable of, I'm expecting the Gen Two to use the AMD Z2 Extreme, and the Go Lite the Z1 (Non-Extreme) in a smaller form factor without detachable controllers.
- The iOS Emulator Delta will soon support online multiplayer.
- And for my book recommendation of the week: Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment by Jason Schreier (Bookshop, Amazon)
And that's all for this week!
Thank you as always, and happy gaming!
