#62: Sick in VR but having a great time

In today's edition of the overkill digest newsletter, we're taking a look at my time with PSVR2 on PC.

Hello stranger,

A bit over a week left before gamescom 2024. My hype levels are slowly climbing, even if we have fewer appointments this year than last. This is on purpose, though, as we had over 40 appointments in three days in 2023, which were clearly too much.

This year I want to give ourselves more time to check out the show floors which we barely saw last time. But I am still planning to report daily from the show floor, so sign up for the free pop-up newsletter here. This is also the penultimate time that I will say this.

And with that, let's get to this week's newsletter!

Big this week

After much testing (thanks to everyone who helped us last week) and many bug fixes, we finally launched a beta version of the Fallout: London installer.

How to install Fallout London on Steam Deck (Automated)
This ambitious Fallout 4 mod is now available. Here’s how to play Fallout: London on Valve’s Steam Deck handheld, thanks to our 1-click-installer.

Thanks to this script, you can in a few taps and clicks install Fallout: London on your Steam Deck. The script will take care of downgrading Fallout 4, installing GOG, downloading the necessary files, and making everything run smoothly.

A lot of work in the end was done by krupar101 who brought the initial script over the finish line. It was also him, who added "Update" support to the installer. So now it will even take care of upgrading whenever the dev team releases a new version of Fallout: London (which they did a few days ago, with more updates planned; the changelogs are on their Discord server).

We'll spend more time helping everyone fix their problems and keep the script running whenever the FOLON team decides to update.

Though, now naturally we've also been thinking if there are any other games we want to create scripts for. So if you know of anything, hit reply!

In other news

  • This week, Sony finally released the adapter that makes PSVR2 run on PC. Mine arrived on Thursday, and while it is still early, I had more fun these last few days with the headset, than the whole year that I owned the PSVR2 for my PS5. The two main highlights so far are Half-Life: Alyx and a modded version of Skyrim VR (both games are conveniently on sale). However, it was also the first time I suffered from motion sickness. This happened while playing Skyrim VR, as the game suddenly started to lag hard! I had to lie down for half an hour. I currently only have an RTX 3070, and for whatever reason, SteamVR defaults to twice the internal resolution of the screens used in the PSVR2. So my poor GPU was pushing more than 4K, twice, before I dialled that down. This fried my brain. But like I said, I am still having fun, though, and now I am on the lookout for more great VR experiences. Currently on my wishlist are Boneworks, Beat Saber, and Blade and Sorcery.
  • If you ever wondered what hall-sensing analogue sticks do, Chris has got you covered as he wrote a primer explaining the technology.
  • Anbernic has a new handheld in the pipelines called the RG40XX V. It's a vertical Game Boy lookalike with "ultra-narrow bezels". It will come in three colour variants, run a version of Linux, and feature a 3200mAh battery. No prices yet, and no release date, but I am guessing sometime in September for around $70.
  • Valve might maybe, potentially, possibly, hypothetically be working on a new game in the Half-Life universe. Maybe it's Half-Life 3, maybe it's something else. But they are at least working on something codenamed "White Sands".
  • AYANEO's Pocket Ev0 is now available on Indiegogo for a starting price of $389. If you also lost track of which one this is: Android-based, looks like a slim AYANEO 2s, and has very similar hardware to the Pocket S I reviewed recently. Too many handhelds, I swear!
  • Sony released the PC requirements for God of War: Ragnarök, and you need a whoping 190 GB of free space. At minimum, the game also needs a GTX 1060 or an AMD RX 5500XT, to run the game at 1080p30 at the low settings. This to me sounds like the Steam Deck will not be able to run this game at decent settings, if at all. But if you rock a Z1 Extreme or a 7840U-based handheld, you might be luckier. To be seen!
  • Depending on how long you read this newsletter, you know how much I love my mods, so you can bet a cookie that I'm happy to see Doom Eternal support mods now, too!
  • In an episode of the Xbox Two podcast, Jez Corden shared that Microsoft will release a successor to the Xbox Series S|X in 2026, with a handheld release on top of that. So far, the community speculated that the handheld Microsoft is supposedly working on would be a hybrid device like the Nintendo Switch, but now Corden (who has a good track record), clarified that it's two separate devices. You can guess which one I'm interested in!
  • There are now 2000 games on GeForce Now.

Ok, that's it. As always thanks for reading!

Now I'll head back to Skyrim in VR. Let's hope I don't get motion-sick again...

See ya!

Kevin
