Thoughts on Nintendo's new machine, plus Xbox begins to tease its next generation.
Hey!
This is overkill Digest, your weekly newsletter about tech, gaming and the cool stuff in-between. Chris here with you this week — usually Kevin is the one penning these emails, however as he's away for the weekend I'll be taking the reins and sharing what stories and links caught my eye.
I'm going to kick things off by sharing my own Nintendo Switch 2 review with you all (there's a YouTube version too if you'd rather watch). It's a rather safe, but well realised upgrade that I like a lot. Here's what I had to say:
"The Nintendo Switch 2 is a modest continuity update for OLED owners, a hugely compelling upgrade for those coming from the original hardware, and an insane offering for those who skipped on the Switch entirely"

Anyway, let's get to the links!
🚀 Big Moves
- Xbox has started to outline its plans for its next generation of devices, announcing a new multi-year partnership with AMD.
🎮 Platform Updates
- If you're running the Steam Beta Client you may spotted that Proton is now available by default.
- Whatever the next Xbox ends up being, it's looking likely that it will be backwards compatible.
- Nintendo is wasting no time, seemingly banning any Switch 2 consoles that use the MIG Switch cartridge.
💻 Hardware & Software
- Bungie has pushed back the release date of its extraction shooter Marathon — with no new date given. 😬
- For those GameChat sessions: The Switch 2 supports webcams over USB C, but not all of them work. It's a bit weird.
- The Nintendo community is coming together and testing a bunch of Switch 1 games to see how they perform the Switch 2.
- CD Project Red is said to be taking a 'console-first' approach with The Witcher 4. Take from that what you will.
- Taki Udon is planning a Super Switch Lite.
- After budding up with Ray-Ban, now Meta are working with Oakley on a new set of shades. Here's internet nerd Zuck modelling them.
🎲 Playthings
- Nintendo has shared a closer look at next month's Donkey Kong Bananza. I wasn't particularly impressed after my brief hands-on with the game, but this Direct got me back on side. It's looking good.
- Ok, I know nothing about Magic: The Gathering, but Kevin is a fan. So, if you like Final Fantasy and have always been MtG curious, now seems like a good a time as any to jump in?
📌 Quick(ish) Hits
- Adobe are getting into the camera app game, with a new free iPhone app. If you've ever tinkered with the likes of Moment or Halide then this 'Project Indigo' app will likely be of interest to you.
- There's plenty of changes afoot at community modding site Nexus Mods, with a new ownership structure causing some concern and raising questions.
- Tinkering with the HDR settings on the Switch 2? Here's a handy video to help.
- ...erm, someone managed to get iOS running on an original Switch.

- The Steam Summer Sale gets underway on Thursday — we'll be sure to dig out the best deals.
Alright, that's all from me. Thanks so much for reading! Regular service with Kevin will resume next week.
Cheers,
