Here's our list of the best upcoming games hitting the Steam store., including SteamWorld Build, Born of Bread, and A Highland Song.
Tis the season to stay indoors, hunker down, and play video games. Yup, as the year draws to a close it's time to take one last look over which games are landing on Steam over the next month.
These are some of the most followed and most wishlisted titles hitting the Steam store over the next few weeks. Let's get to it!
🎄 December 2023 Steam Games
SteamWorld Build
🗓️ Release date: December 1
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: Playable
Build your own town in this Old West inspired builder sim set in the SteamWorld universe. Keep the steambots happy, grow your town, and dig deep for resources — and if you're curious if SteamWorld Build runs on the Steam Deck? The good news is — yes, it does. It currently has the 'Playable' badge over on the Steam store.
Born of Bread
🗓️ Release date: December 5
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
This charming Paper Mario-like is an RPG with all the usual turn-based tropes. We played this one earlier this year at gamescom and really does look the part — you play as 'Loaf' in what looks like a rather wacky and joyful 2.5D adventure.
A Highland Song
🗓️ Release date: December 5
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
A 2D platformer from developer 'inkle' that's set in the beautiful, wild, rural Scottish Highlands. It's from the same team behind Heaven's Vault and 80 Days. A story rich adventure about main character Moira, who is running away — and must first cross a series of peaks, paths and dangers in-between.
The Day Before
🗓️ Release date: December 7
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
This survival game is set in a big post-apocalyptic city based on the US East Coast — your job is to survive against the deadly infected following a pandemic. It's in early access starting December 7. Beyond its clear 'Last of Us but multiplayer feel, the inventory management also has strong Resident Evil 4 vibes. It has plenty of wish lists and follows, but its development has been rather rocky.
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader
🗓️ Release date: December 7
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
A classical RPG in which you and your crew explore the Koronus Expanse. Battles are played out in tactical turn-based combat across an isometric grid, adapting the Rogue Trader ruleset to a video game. Story rich, Warhammer action in which your choices matter.
↳ Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader on Steam
Three Kingdoms Zhao Yun
🗓️ Release date: December 7
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
An early-access 3D action RPG with real-time battles in which you explore the Three Kingdoms of ancient China. There's a "unique war horse" system for horse battle scenarios too — no word on any horse armour DLC though.
↳ Three Kingdoms Zhao Yun on Steam
Stargate: Timekeepers
🗓️ Release date: December 12
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
A real-time sci-fi strategy tactics game set in the SG-1 universe. Fans of the show will find plenty to like here as the game establishes its own post season 7 narrative told over 14 missions.
↳ Stargate: Timekeepers on Steam
Pioneers of Pagonia
🗓️ Release date: December 12
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
Manage the needs and wants of island inhabitants in this early-access colony building sim.
↳ Pioneers of Pagonia on Steam
Direct Contact
🗓️ Release date: December 13
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
Another early access game — this time it's a tactical first-person shooter which seems to focus on offering up an authentic experience, with in-game weapons adhering to "real-world specifications".
House Flipper 2
🗓️ Release date: December 14
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
More home improvement sim fun, be that with a hammer, paint roller or mop.
Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising
🗓️ Release date: December 14
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
The latest 2D action strategic fighting game in the GBVS series with an action RPG style campaign too.
↳ Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising
Soulslinger: Envoy of Death
🗓️ Release date: December 14
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
An early access, fast-paced rogue-lite first person shooter. It's a dark, gritty, fantasy Western in which you must escape limbo, "break free of the shackles of the afterlife", and take on the souls of a bloody, criminal cartel.
↳ Soulslinger: Envoy of Death on Steam
Paranoid
🗓️ Release date: December 15
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
A little pre-holiday horror anyone? This gory first-person action adventure game tells the psychedelic story of protagonist Patrick — and there's two ways the game can end.
The Enjenir
🗓️ Release date: December 18
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
This next one is a touch lighter. It's a 3D sandbox physics game (complete with amusing ragdoll controls) in which you put your engineering and problem solving skills to the test. Think Human Fall Flat meets Poly Bridge — there's a demo available.
Only Up 2
🗓️ Release date: December 18
🎮 Steam Deck compatibility: TBC
Ok, this is a weird one. Only Up was something of a viral hit earlier this year, offering up an odd and really difficult vertical platforming challenge. The game faced various issues however, particularly around some of the assets used in the game, and as such it was ultimately pulled from sale, with the creator saying they were moving on to other things.
Now this game has showed up on Steam — it looks very similar, but is not from the same developer. This is no sequel, instead it's just using the name for a bit of recognition.
That's a wrap! Did you add any of the above to your wishlist?
