The hardware maker now has a number of Android handhelds, but there's no plans for a smartphone.
Despite releasing a good number of Android-based handhelds over the past couple of years, including the likes of the Pocket S and Pocket Micro, device maker AYANEO have confirmed they have no plans to enter in to the highly competitive smartphone space.
We recently spoke with AYANEO CEO Arthur Zhang about their upcoming Pocket EVO Android portable, and whilst discussing all things Android we questioned whether the hardware maker, having now got a good bit of experience working with Google's mobile OS, was considering a foray into the phone space. To date the company has created a wide array of handhelds, along with mini PCs and graphic docks.
Zhang told us although the company now has "relatively rich experience" with Android, developing smartphones requires "higher demands and involves very high licensing fees" — as such they've no plans to manufacture phones at this time. Zhang also noted the highly competitive nature of the smartphone space, particularly amongst the mainstream handset makers.
So, although you won't be seeing AYANEO's design chops in a smartphone anytime soon, Zhang concluded on a positive tease of sorts, saying the company still has "many interesting handhelds" on the way.
