🔗 The new AMD Z2 chips are nice, ok, and weird
AMD has three new APUs for handheld devices, but the line-up is confusing.
AMD dropped more details on their new handheld APUs. The Z2 Extreme mixes Zen 3 and Zen 5c CPU cores with RDNA 3.5 graphics, packs 16 GPU cores (up from 12), and can boost 5 watts higher (nice!). The Z2 is basically just a Z1 Extreme with a new name — same GPU cores, same RDNA 3, and (probably) the same CPU cores (ok!). Then there’s the Z2 Go, which has fewer CPU cores than the regular Z1, runs on RDNA 2 (same as the Steam Deck), but at least comes with 12 GPU cores — way more than the Z1’s 4 or the Deck’s 3 (weird!).
One catch, however: every chip has a minimum TDP of 15W. Kinda high when the Steam Deck dips as low as 4W. Honestly, this lineup’s a bit confusing. Guess we’ll have to wait for benchmarks. [via The Verge]
