In today's overkill digest newsletter we'll look at Rockstar's rug pull, the ‘leaked’ Nintendo Switch 2 rumours, and more.
Hi, hello, and welcome to a new edition of the overkill digest newsletter.
What a busy gaming week we had. In last week's newsletter, I shared that I planned to play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, Star Wars: Outlaws, and Astro Bot during my two-week vacation, but I completely missed that we've also got Final Fantasy XVI, Frostpunk 2 and God of War: Ragnarök this week, and we'll get Ara and EA Sports FC 25 in the coming days.
I also "procrastinated" and only played Outlaws for a few hours before going all-in into Hades II. So, yeah, still a lot to catch up on. But for now, let's get to this week's newsletter. And since there are 15 items on the list, we're going straight into the news part:
What happened this week
- AMD is working on FSR4 promising much better battery life on handheld devices.
- We interviewed AYANEO CEO Arthur Zhang and asked him about the upcoming Pocket EVO and if they are ever going to do a phone (the answer is no, but I really want them to make one).
- Thanks to mods, we now have seasons, a reputation system, a restored ending, and more in The Witcher 3.
- Maybe the Nintendo Switch 2 leaked this week, at least the renders are boring enough to be believable. Maybe we'll learn more next week during Tokyo Game Show?
- Polygon has shared their "Best Steam Deck Accessories" list and while I find some choices very odd, it's generally a good round-up. Here's mine from last year. I should maybe update it.
- Rockstar added anti-cheat software to GTA: Online breaking the mode for all Steam Deck players. And while BattlEye has a Linux-compatibility mode, so far Rockstar has refused to enable the option and simply declared GTA: Online unplayable on Steam Deck. We call that a "d*ck move".
- We might get Black Myth: Wukong DLC early next year.
- In a previous life, I used to stream on Twitch on occasion and one of the games I loved to play was called Spellbreak. Unfortunately, the game was taken offline after the studio was acquired by Activision Blizzard. But the good guys at Proletariat Inc. did something every game studio should do and released a community version for free on Itch.io. This happened back in 2022, though I completely missed this and stumbled upon it thanks to this article by RPS. I've been thinking if I should dabble in streaming again and this would be a game I'd love to play (hit me up, if this is something you want to see)!
- More leaks point to a remastered PC version of Red Dead Redemption. Thankfully, this game has no online mode for Rockstar to mess with.
- But wait, there is more remaster news. Sony is working on a remastered version of Horizon Zero Dawn for PC and PS5 for whatever reason. I don't know who is asking for this as the game is already perfectly playable on both platforms.
- I'm a sucker for vertical emulation handhelds (the Game Boy was after all my first handheld), so I'm looking with big interest at the TrimUI Brick, a new handheld with a 3.2" 4:3 screen. It has 1 gig of memory, 8 GB of internal storage, comes in at 159 grams and supports BlueTooth, WiFi and even has RGB.
- Get your "Shocked Pikachu memes" ready because Nintendo has sued Palworld maker Pocketpair for... patent infringement? This isn't about the pals looking like Pokémon (that would be a copyright or IP infringement) but apparently, it's all about throwing pokéballs.
- Remember how everyone was angry at Sony for pricing the upcoming PS5 Pro as high as they did? Well, the internet forgot about that already, as we (yep, me too) are now all salivating over the 30th Anniversary PlayStation Sony announced. There will only be 12,500 units, so scalpers will surely beat Sony's PS5 Pro pricing by a lot!
- As mentioned above God of War: Ragnarök launched for PC, and while the game can run on Steam Deck at low to mid settings, as reported by Rock Paper Shotgun it's a very buggy experience. And it also requires a PSN account which is why it's getting review-bombed like crazy.
- OneXPlayer announced the OneXGPU 2, featuring an AMD Radeon RX 7800M, an integrated dock with an OCulink port, USB 4.0, HDMI, and DP, as well as a 2280 m.2 SSD dock. It's priced at $899.
Ok, that's all the news I got for you.
We'll talk again next week,
See you!
